“Gentle Jesus, meek and mild” is the opening line of a hymn some people here learned in childhood. It is a helpful image for a child, to recognise the meekness of Jesus and to seek to live like that even as a child. But these two words do not reveal the whole character of Jesus.
While we read about Jesus doing and saying things that fit this description, we will also read Jesus saying things that aren’t what you might expect from someone described as ‘meek’. Some of his words can be quite unsettling the first time you read them. So maybe our understanding of meekness is wrong, or at least incomplete.
