Reading the Bible can be a dangerous exercise. We can go from reading something that is wonderful and comforting to reading something that makes us ask, “What’s going on here?” In recent weeks we have been enjoying the beauty and wonder of chapter seven from 2 Samuel.

Today we turn to chapter eight, and we might scratch our head wondering what happened to the beauty and wonder we had been reading about. But it is important that we keep reading and that we read carefully.

The Bible is not a collection of random statements designed to make us feel good. Rather it is the story of God and his dealing with his people, and all stories include the parts we enjoy and the parts we need to think more about. So today, we will focus on chapter eight and see what God is doing through David, and then ask the question, what might God do through you?
